Trauma and I had a relationship long before I knew how to define trauma or relationship. We go back like four flats on a Cadillac… I often thought that the things that had happened to me were in some way my fault. And if only I had been better, if only I had been more understanding or more compassionate, if only I had loved harder…things would have turned out differently. I internalized everything for so long, always placing the blame on me, not where it truly belonged. I often found myself arguing with myself that I was not a victim. Yet I knew that I was not a perpetrator. I knew that when I said no, he was to stop. I knew that when I called the police I needed help. As I heard the air come out of my tires that fateful day I didn’t want that air to come out of me also.
