If an abuser has access to your email account, he or she may be able to read your incoming and outgoing mail. If you believe your account is secure, make sure you choose a password he or she will not be able to guess.
If an abuser sends you threatening or harassing email messages, print them and save them as evidence of this abuse.
History/cache file
Your abuser may check your computer's history or cache file (automatically saved web pages and graphics), and access the information you have recently viewed online. You're able to clear your history or empty your cache file in your web browser's settings. Clear your browsing history, delete temporary disk cache/ internet files, and any saved information from your search toolbars.
Please note: This information may not completely hide your tracks. Many browser types have features that display recently visited sites. The safest way to search for information on the Internet if you are in danger is at a local library, a friend's house, or at work if possible.
Basic Internet Safety Points:
Always read a website's privacy policy before giving any personal information. Make sure that a website offers a secure connection before giving credit card information.
Do not share private or personal information over the internet, such as: address, telephone number, social security number or passwords.
Do not open email attachments from contacts you do not know.
If you use social networking sites, be cautious as to information and pictures that are posted and/or shared. Check your privacy settings often.
Change all passwords if you feel someone has access to your account(s).
Always clear your “Recycle Bin” or “Deleted Items” folders. Be sure to do the same for your email accounts as well.
Do not allow your browser to save any passwords if you are fearful of someone accessing your accounts.
You have the option of using incognito mode on your browser. Incognito mode is a privacy feature that prevents your web cache or history from being recorded. To access, click the menu/tools icon in the left hand corner and select New Incognito Window. **WEBSITES WILL STILL RECOGNIZE YOUR IP ADDRESS.
